Amy Acton Joins Ohio Nurses Association in Delaware County to Stand Up for Ohioans’ Healthcare

Yesterday, Dr. Amy Acton joined members of the Ohio Nurses Association, new mothers, and local residents in Delaware County for a press conference to highlight the impact of the closure of Grady Memorial Hospital’s maternity ward. Dr. Acton  emphasized her commitment to protect Ohioans’ healthcare, stand up against attacks on Medicaid and Medicare, and fight to keep Ohio’s hospitals open.

“I’m a doctor, I’m a mom, and I can say with absolute certainty we have a healthcare crisis on our hands in this state and in this country. What we’re seeing here in Delaware County is not an exception. We have 11 rural hospitals right now on the verge of collapse. This is bigger than any one healthcare system or Ohio Health; this is a systemic issue,” said Dr. Amy Acton. “I’m running for governor because I see folks struggling everywhere I go, and I just can’t look the other way while people are suffering. I will fight to protect Ohioans’ health care and ensure that everyone in our state has access to the care they need.”

“Our city, our county, our region, our state deserves access to health care, especially for our most vulnerable citizens,” said Linsey Griffith, Delaware City Ward 1 Council Member. “Ohio is 48th in the nation in infant mortality. We are 37th in the nation in preterm birth, and we are 29th in the nation in maternal mortality.”

“Closures like these do not affect everyone equally. The families who will disproportionately be affected are the families with fewer resources, fewer options, less flexibility at work, less access to transportation, and fewer alternatives when things don’t go according to plan,” said Monica DeTota, local mother who had previously given birth at Grady Memorial Hospital. “Healthcare systems cannot be built around best-case scenarios. They have to be built for the moments when things don’t go according to plan.”
