Dr. Amy Acton Calls for Statehouse To Pass Immediate Conditional Data Center Moratorium Legislation As They Reconvene
COLUMBUS, OH– Today, one week after Dr. Amy Acton called on Vivek Ramaswamy to sell his individual stocks and divest from data centers, Dr. Acton released the following statement calling for the Statehouse to pass immediate, bipartisan legislation to enact her conditional moratorium on data centers when they reconvene next week:
“Ohioans have been clear; we need to lower costs, which is why I am calling on our Statehouse to pass a conditional moratorium on data centers when they return to session next week,” said Dr. Amy Acton. “My opponent is seconding my call to deliver Ohioans emergency relief at the gas pump, but we can’t stop there. While billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy has millions of dollars personally invested in data centers, I am calling on lawmakers from across the aisle to come together and fight against the unchecked development of data centers driving up costs in our communities. I will always put the needs of working families over the wants of billionaires, corporations and special interests.”
Dr. Acton was the first candidate in Ohio’s race for governor to call for a conditional moratorium on data centers to ensure:
- Data centers cannot pass any additional costs on to ratepayers. All costs for gas, water and electricity need to be covered by data centers and their investors, not Ohio taxpayers or our communities. Data centers must invest in their own energy generation options and prove the project will not increase our electricity prices or negatively impact regional reliability.
- Data centers cannot use NDAs. No more secret deals. Ohioans must know who is coming into our communities, and at what cost and risk; transparency and accountability are not negotiable.
- Data centers cannot be built without union labor. Any data center development must be built with union labor. The jobs to build, maintain, operate and upgrade data centers must be good-paying, union jobs operated by Ohioans who are trained in Ohio.
- Data centers cannot violate environmental standards. Data centers must maintain zero environmental impact and use responsible and modern water-management systems that protect local waterways, groundwater, and air and meet rigorous environmental and quality of life standards.
- Prioritizing brownfields. Data center development must prioritize brownfields and previously developed industrial sites, not farms or the hearts of our communities.
Vivek Ramaswamy, who invested millions of dollars in data centers, is THE pro data center candidate in this race.
- Ramaswamy refuses to sell his data center stocks.
- Ramaswamy has repeatedly said he wants more data centers in Ohio and called them “good,” even praising data centers 10 times in one month.
- While running for governor, Ramaswamy even flew to Utah for a “data center energy conference.”
- Ramaswamy’s running mate voted for legislation that made Ohio more attractive to data centers and said, “it’s to Ohio’s benefit to have data centers.”
