DR. AMY ACTON ENDORSED BY AKRON BEACON JOURNAL AND THE CHRONICLE TELEGRAM EDITORIAL BOARDS
“We believe Acton will be a person who can break through the partisanship and incivility to get real work done.”
AKRON & ELYRIA, OH– This week, the Editorial Boards for the Akron Beacon Journal and Chronicle Telegram endorsed Dr. Amy Acton’s campaign for governor, citing Dr. Acton’s willingness “to reach across the aisle” and ability to bring “the right combination of compassion and knowledge to the job.” The Editorial Boards called Vivek Ramaswamy a “performer” and criticized his “below-the-belt personal hits” on Dr. Acton, referencing Ramaswamy’s disgusting attack ad featuring her estranged and abusive mother.
Akron Beacon Journal: Ohio governor’s race is getting ugly. Here’s who has our vote
- We see Ramaswamy continue to advance proposals such as cutting property taxes without providing a clear explanation of how schools would be funded in their absence.
- The extremity of his stage presence is rivaled only by the ads that support him – primarily by tearing down his opponent in below-the-belt personal hits that have crescendoed as the election draws nearer.
- We believe Acton will be a person who can break through the partisanship and incivility to get real work done. She demonstrates this now as she continues to work with Gov. Mike DeWine, despite his endorsement of Ramaswamy.
- Acton also shows a willingness not only to reach across the aisle, but also seek input and take feedback from experts who she says she hopes to have with her at the table.
- We also believe Acton is capable of seeing problems through multiple lenses. Throughout our interview, Acton repeatedly returned to the challenges facing ordinary Ohioans: the cost of everyday life, access to health care, housing instability and the need for a government that works for people rather than political parties.
- Her background in public health gave her years of experience working on the underlying conditions that shape people’s lives, from addiction and infant mortality to housing instability and access to health care.
- Given these issues’ lasting persistence in Northeast Ohio, we feel hopeful that Acton could begin to tackle them with a holistic view and new approach.
- [Dr. Amy Acton] has shown a willingness to listen, collaborate and seek expertise rather than pretend to have all the answers.
- Ohio does not need a performer for its next governor, but rather a thoughtful leader focused on solving problems and building bridges across our great divide.
- …For that reason, we endorse [Dr. Amy Acton] for governor.
Chronicle Telegram: Elect Amy Acton as governor
- We believe Acton, a Democrat and medical doctor, would… prioritize the public good for all Ohioans were she elected governor to replace the term-limited DeWine.
- “I think people are ready for change,” Acton told us…
- Ramaswamy said he would start with cutting capital-gains taxes, a move that would largely benefit the wealthy.
- Acton also promised to tackle taxes, including through child-tax credits for families earning up to $85,000 per year.
- Acton… wants a data-center moratorium, and she called for stronger guardrails about how data centers are built. She argued that data centers should pay their own way when it comes to energy and shouldn’t contribute to price hikes on electricity… She said she wanted to ensure that environmental regulations were followed and that data centers were built on old industrial sites rather than farmland. She also wanted to end nondisclosure agreements between data centers and governments.
- Acton struck us as having a more realistic grasp of why data centers are facing such fierce opposition, and we believe she would do a better job regulating them.
- Ohio’s gubernatorial race has been especially ugly this year, something that was on clear display this week when an odious video featuring Acton’s mother, Donna Arthur, was released.
- Ramaswamy has defended the ad, and his campaign has said it would invest $4 million in circulating it, but it has drawn widespread criticism, including from some Republicans. For example, on Thursday, DeWine condemned the ad, although he declined to withdraw his endorsement of Ramaswamy.
- Ultimately, we believe that Acton would bring the right combination of compassion and knowledge to the job, making her the best choice to be Ohio’s next governor.
