Over a quarter of Ohioans live in rural communities across the state, but they often lack the resources they need to thrive. As governor, I am committed to uplifting and protecting these communities to ensure every rural Ohioan has access to the infrastructure, healthcare, and opportunities they deserve.
Investing in Rural Infrastructure
Our rural communities deserve access to modern infrastructure. As governor, I’ll continue to invest in our rural roads, bridges, and broadband that our communities depend on, including our farmers.
Modern farming needs access to reliable rural broadband. I’ll work to ensure that high-speed internet reaches every rural and underserved community in our state by working closely with our local governments, small farms, and telecom companies to expand access across the state.
Protecting Rural Healthcare
As healthcare costs rise and funding is slashed, rural Ohioans are the hardest hit, with 11 rural hospitals now at risk of collapsing. In many parts of the state, you have to travel over an hour to have a baby or get a cavity filled.
I’m a doctor, and I know firsthand how important it is for Ohioans to have accessible and affordable healthcare. As governor, it will be my priority to ensure rural Ohioans can access affordable healthcare close to home. I will work to identify funding to cover financial gaps for rural healthcare programs, expand telehealth options and do everything in my power to lower insurance premiums and cut healthcare costs. I will fight to keep rural hospitals open so every Ohioan, no matter where you live, can access the quality healthcare they deserve.
Fighting the Opioid Epidemic
I’ve spent my career fighting to address the opioid crisis. As Ohio Health Director, I fought to hold big pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in the opioid crisis by leveraging a massive settlement for our state. As governor, I will continue the work I did alongside Governor DeWine to navigate the opioid crisis, an issue that is paramount in our rural communities. I will advocate for expanded treatment and recovery services, particularly in rural areas, continue my work holding corporations accountable, and invest in community overdose prevention resources.
